Take 20: The Small Pause That Can Change Your Direction

Menopause can feel like someone quietly changed the settings in your brain.

Things that never worried you before suddenly do.

You second-guess yourself.

  • You hesitate

  • You overthink.

  • You imagine worst-case scenarios.

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone.

As oestrogen levels change during menopause, many women notice increased anxiety, heightened stress, and a greater sensitivity to uncertainty. Add poor sleep, hot flushes, brain fog, and the physical changes happening in your body, and it's easy to understand why fear can begin to take up more space.

The challenge is that fear has a habit of feeding itself.

One fearful thought becomes another. Your brain starts looking for evidence that confirms your worries. Without realising it, those thought patterns become familiar pathways.

The good news?

Your brain is also capable of creating new pathways.

Not overnight. Not through pretending everything is wonderful. And not by forcing yourself to "just think positive."

Instead, it begins with awareness.

Introducing "Take 20"

When you notice fear creeping in, don't argue with it.

Don't judge yourself for having it.

Simply...

Take 20 seconds.

  1. Pause.

  2. Take one slow breath.

  3. Notice what you're thinking.

Then gently ask yourself:

  • Is this fear protecting me, or limiting me?

  • What do I actually know to be true?

  • What's one helpful step I can take right now?

That tiny pause interrupts the automatic fear response.

You're no longer reacting. You're choosing your response.

Twenty seconds won't erase anxiety.

But it can stop fear from driving the bus.

Fear Shrinks Your World

Fear often whispers:

"Don't try."

"Stay where it's safe."

"You're too old."

"You'll probably fail."

When we listen to those thoughts often enough, our world slowly becomes smaller.

  • We stop saying yes.

  • We stop learning.

  • We stop trusting ourselves.

But courage doesn't arrive before action.

It usually arrives after the first small step.

Choose Your Next Step

"Take 20" isn't about becoming fearless.

It's about becoming intentional.

It's choosing curiosity over catastrophe.

Possibility over prediction.

One breath over panic.

One thought over a hundred imagined problems.

Those twenty seconds may seem insignificant.

But they can change your next decision.

And your next decision can change your direction.

Because life isn't changed by one giant leap.

It's changed by thousands of small moments where you choose not to let fear make the decision for you.

So the next time fear knocks...

Take 20.

  1. Pause.

  2. Breathe.

  3. Choose your next step.

  4. Your future doesn't need perfection.

  5. It simply needs your next intentional moment.
